One is a tiny machine, the other keeps better time. Here is how to choose.
A battery sends current through a quartz crystal that vibrates at a precise frequency. Result: accuracy within seconds a month, a ticking (stepped) seconds hand, and almost no maintenance beyond a battery every few years. Quartz watches are lighter on the wallet and the wrist.
A rotor spins as you move, winding a mainspring — no battery. You get a smooth sweeping seconds hand and a mechanism you can often see through a caseback. Trade-offs: less accurate (seconds per day, not per month), they stop if unworn for a day or two, and they benefit from a service every several years.
Whatever you choose, compare the exact model across stores before buying — the same reference can swing widely in price.
