Is sulfate-free shampoo actually better?

Sometimes — it depends on your hair, not the hype.

Short version: Sulfates are effective cleansers that can be too stripping for dry, curly, colour-treated or damaged hair. If that's you, sulfate-free helps. If your hair is fine, oily and uncoloured, regular shampoo is fine.

What sulfates do

They're the detergents that make shampoo lather and cut through oil and buildup — very effectively. The downside is they can also strip natural oils, which matters most for hair that's already dry or chemically treated.

Who benefits from sulfate-free

Curly / coily, dry, or frizz-prone — yes, keeps moisture.
Colour-treated — yes, colour fades slower.
Fine, oily, uncoloured — not really; sulfate shampoo cleans better and you may prefer it.
