How to Pick a Dog Crate and Bed That Actually Last

I've bought a crate my puppy outgrew in four months and a "luxury" bed he shredded in an afternoon. Both were avoidable. Crates and beds are where a little upfront thinking saves you from buying the same thing three times — so here's how I size, choose, and chewer-proof them now, plus the mistakes I made so you don't have to.

Size the crate for the adult dog, not the puppy

The crate should be just big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down fully stretched — no bigger. Too much room and a puppy will use one corner as a bathroom, which defeats the housetraining purpose entirely. But you don't want to rebuy as they grow, so the smart move is a dog crate sized for the adult dog that comes with a divider panel. You block off the excess while they're small and slide it back as they grow. Check the breed's expected adult dimensions before you order, not the puppy's current size.

Crate type: match it to the job

Wire crates fold flat, ventilate well, and are easy to clean — my default for home use, and most come with that divider. A wire dog crate is the workhorse. Plastic airline-style carriers are sturdier, cozier (some dogs prefer the den feel), and the only kind that's actually travel-rated, so if you fly or want a safer car option, that's the one. Soft-sided fabric crates are light and great for an already-trained, calm dog at events — but a chewer or escape artist will be through the mesh in minutes, so don't start a puppy in one. For strong dogs who bend wire, a heavy-duty heavy duty dog crate in welded steel is worth the cost; it's the last crate you'll buy.

Beds: fill and cover matter more than looks

The pretty bed in the photo is usually the least practical one. What actually matters is the fill and the cover. For a young, healthy dog, a simple bolstered dog bed with a removable, machine-washable cover covers most needs — and washability is non-negotiable, because beds get gross faster than you'd believe. Look for a cover you can strip in seconds and a chew-resistant, water-resistant base.

For an older dog, or a big breed prone to joint trouble, this is where I spend more. A genuine orthopedic dog bed with solid memory foam (not loose poly-fill that flattens in a month) makes a real difference for aging hips — I watched my senior dog go from circling and groaning to settling instantly. "Orthopedic" is an unregulated word, though, so check that it's an actual foam slab with a stated thickness, not a thin pad over fluff.

Chewer-proofing and the destruction tax

If your dog destroys beds, stop buying expensive plush ones — you're paying a destruction tax. Go for a tough, tightly-woven chew proof dog bed or an elevated cot-style bed, which many chewers ignore because there's nothing to disembowel. An elevated elevated dog bed also keeps them off cold or hot floors and is brilliant for outdoor or crate-resistant dogs. Address the chewing itself too — a bored dog shreds beds, so more exercise and a real chew toy often fix the "bed problem" better than any product.

What I'd skip

Skip buying a crate sized for the puppy you have today. Skip soft fabric crates for any dog that chews, panics, or hasn't been crate-trained. Skip cheap beds with non-removable covers — you'll be throwing the whole thing out. Skip "orthopedic" labels that are really just thin foam over filler; read the construction. And skip the bed entirely for a destructive young dog until you've sorted the chewing; a folded blanket you don't mind losing is fine in the meantime.

Buy once, buy right

The thread through all of this is simple: size and build for the dog you'll have in a year, match the type to how you'll actually use it, and don't out-spend your dog's stage of life. A wire crate with a divider, a washable bed for a young dog, and a real orthopedic foam bed for an old one will outlast a closet full of impulse buys. Crates and beds aren't where you want to learn by repeated failure — I already did that, so you can skip straight to the version that lasts.
