They're prized today for easy temperaments, intelligence, and a willingness to take commands, but the working instinct didn't vanish when they moved indoors. That means daily exercise isn't a nice-to-have; it's a requirement. A bored, under-exercised sporting dog becomes a destructive one. Most of them carry short, soft, almost human-like coats that shed rarely and barely noticeably when they do, which is exactly what makes them workable for allergy sufferers — but every one of them still needs regular brushing once or twice a week with a dog grooming brush to keep that coat from matting.

The Poodle: the versatile original

It needs real daily exercise — long walks, a run in the park, or a backyard to tire itself out in — which makes it a better fit for larger homes than apartments.

The German Shorthaired Pointer: still a field dog

A cross between a German and an English Pointer, the German Shorthaired Pointer is one of the few on this list still genuinely used for hunting, and it doubles beautifully as a family dog. Its short coat brushes out easily, sheds far less than a long coat, and holds little dander — exactly why it suits allergy sufferers. Long, lean, friendly, and loyal, it responds fast to noise and movement and is a superb outdoor companion. Care is light on the grooming front: it doesn't need frequent grooming and only wants a bath when it's genuinely dirty, for which a gentle dog shampoo does the job. Smaller and quieter options

Not every working breed is large. The Australian Terrier, once a rat-and-mouse catcher, is now a pleasant companion dog with long hair that doesn't shed — and you can have it clipped close to the body if you prefer. It's a good choice for those wanting a smaller, people-loving dog. The Basenji is the quirky one: it's one of the few breeds that doesn't bark, instead yodeling or yelping occasionally, which makes it well-suited to apartment living. Originally an African hunting dog, it has short, low-shed hair and a cat-like, independent temperament — quiet and curious, but not always obedient. Both reward an owner who appreciates a dog with a bit of personality.

Whichever of these you lean toward, take the exercise requirement seriously — it's the thread running through every breed here. These dogs come from generations of long hunts and working days, and they have not forgotten it. Give them the activity they're built for, keep a few sturdy dog toys on hand for the in-between hours, stay on top of the light-but-regular grooming their low-shed coats need, and you get something rare: an athletic, capable, genuinely active dog you can share a home with even if ordinary fur leaves you sneezing.
